How a port wine tasting in Denmark sparked a global community
PortFamly has its roots in a port wine tasting on Djursland, a peninsula in Denmark, in 2020. At the time, Søren Andersen posted in the Facebook group Portvin.nu to find a host for a tasting during a company workshop. Ole Stubbe replied:
"Hi Søren. I host quite a few tastings, both for newcomers where I tell the story and for those who really nerd out. You're welcome to give me a call. Best, Ole Stubbe."
Ole came and hosted a fantastic tasting. During the evening, Søren asked him how passionate port wine enthusiasts like himself actually kept track of their collections. The answer was that there really wasn't a good tool for that – and the idea for PortFamly was born.
Søren brought the idea to his colleague Jesper, who was immediately interested in joining. What they lacked was a strong visual profile, so they asked Thomas, who jumped right in. With Ole, Søren, Jesper, and Thomas, the founding team was complete – and PortFamly began its journey.
On May 11, 2021, a meeting was held at Ole's place in Vejen, Denmark, to get to know each other over some truly great port wine (Ole is a very generous host).
On the table were bottles such as Niepoort Presidente, Quinta do Noval 1970,Calem 1970, and Quarles Harris 1977 – and that was the day the project officially started.
From the very beginning, the dream has been clear: to create a portal for port wine enthusiasts, built by port wine enthusiasts. A place where you can find verified information about port wine and register your own collection in the best possible way.
Since then, we've been through a Kickstarter campaign, attempts at coding the solution ourselves, a failed demo version built by a developer, and much more. But today, we stand with a product we believe in – and we're ready to share it with the world.
